What the research actually says — ranked by clinical evidence strength.

Supplements cannot replace sleep, stress management, or addressing an underlying medical condition. But for women who have those foundations in place, the following natural ingredients have meaningful clinical evidence for supporting female sexual desire.

EVIDENCE TIERS USED BELOW

Strong evidence = multiple human RCTs (randomised controlled trials). Moderate evidence = at least one human RCT or robust observational data. Emerging = animal studies or mechanistic research with promising early human data. All supplements should be discussed with your healthcare provider before starting, especially if you take medications.

Strong Clinical Evidence

Maca Root (Lepidium meyenii) STRONG EVIDENCE · 1.5–3.5G/DAY

Multiple human RCTs confirm maca improves libido without altering hormone levels — suggesting a direct

neurological mechanism. A study of 131 people taking maca for 6+ weeks showed consistent libido improvement. Also shown to reduce antidepressant- induced sexual dysfunction in women. Most studies use 1.5–3.5g daily for 6–12 weeks.

Ashwagandha (KSM-66) STRONG EVIDENCE · 300–600MG/DAY

A double-blind placebo-controlled pilot study in women showed significant improvement in sexual function, arousal, lubrication, orgasm, and satisfaction with KSM-66 Ashwagandha. Mechanism: cortisol reduction and testosterone support. Also improves sleep quality — a major indirect libido benefit.

Moderate Clinical Evidence

Red Ginseng (Panax ginseng) MODERATE EVIDENCE · 1,000–3,000MG/DAY

A meta-analysis of RCTs found red ginseng significantly improves sexual function in menopausal women, particularly arousal. A 20-week study of 32 postmenopausal women taking 3g/day showed significant improvement in sexual desire and function. Also boosts nitric oxide — supporting blood flow to genital tissue.

Soy Isoflavones (Aglycone form) MODERATE EVIDENCE · MENOPAUSAL WOMEN

Aglycone isoflavones — the most bioavailable form of phytoestrogens — gently bind to estrogen receptors, buffering the hormonal decline of perimenopause. Multiple RCTs confirm reduction in hot flashes, improved vaginal health, and better sexual comfort and satisfaction in menopausal women.

Tribulus Terrestris MODERATE EVIDENCE · 750MG/DAY

A 90-day study found 88% of women with low sexual satisfaction reported increased desire taking 750mg/day of Tribulus. A separate 2-month study in men confirmed 79% libido improvement. Likely works by supporting testosterone production and LH levels. Most studied in women with low baseline desire.

L-Arginine MODERATE EVIDENCE · 1.5–5G/DAY

L-Arginine is a precursor to nitric oxide, which increases blood flow to the genitals and supports physical arousal. An RCT of 77 women using an L- arginine combination supplement showed significant improvements in sexual desire, vaginal dryness, frequency of sex, orgasm, and clitoral sensation versus placebo.

Nutritional Foundations for Libido

Magnesium ESSENTIAL FOUNDATION

Magnesium regulates cortisol and supports testosterone production. Deficiency — extremely common in women — is associated with elevated stress, poor sleep, and anxiety. Correcting magnesium deficiency often produces noticeable improvements in energy, sleep quality, and mood — all prerequisites for libido.

Omega-3 (EPA + DHA) MOOD & INFLAMMATION

EPA specifically supports serotonin signalling and mood stability. DHA supports dopaminergic pathways involved in sexual motivation. Omega-3 also reduces systemic inflammation — a direct suppressor of hormone production. Consistently associated with improved mood and sexual function.

Zinc TESTOSTERONE SUPPORT

Zinc is essential for testosterone synthesis in both men and women. Low zinc is directly associated with reduced sex hormone levels. A 2021 clinical study confirmed improvement in sexual function with correction of zinc deficiency. Best absorbed in bisglycinate or picolinate forms.

Vitamin D3 HORMONE FOUNDATION

Vitamin D deficiency is significantly more prevalent in women with sexual dysfunction. D3 supports testosterone production, immune function, and mood stability. Supplementation improves hormone balance when levels are low — which is the case for a large proportion of women, particularly during winter months.
